Medical assistant profession is growing daily. More people are attending medical assistant schools and more people are being introduced to the profession. A lot of people once thought that outside of nursing there were no other jobs that one could have to assist physicians. Now more and more people are becoming aware of the medical assistant. Also more clinics are hiring medical assistants for clinics since more nurses are going to work at hospitals.

With the increased need for medical assistants there has been an increase in the number of medical assistant jobs. You can find a medical assistant job in almost any medical field that you are interested in. Since there is a choice of jobs available you are able to find a field that you will truly enjoy working in, in the future.

As for the future, there is an expected increase of medical assistant jobs. The job outlook for medical assistants in very promising. According to The Bureau of Labor Statistics:

Employment is projected to grow much faster than average, ranking medical assistants among the fastest growing occupations over the 2006-16 decade. Job opportunities should be excellent, particularly for those with formal training or experience, and certification.

Employment change. Employment of medical assistants is expected to grow 35 percent from 2006 to 2016, much faster than the average for all occupations. As the health care industry expands because of technological advances in medicine and the growth and aging of the population, there will be an increased need for all health care workers. Increasing use of medical assistants in the rapidly growing health care industry will further stimulate job growth.

Helping to drive job growth is the increasing number of group practices, clinics, and other health care facilities that need a high proportion of support personnel, particularly medical assistants who can handle both administrative and clinical duties. In addition, medical assistants work primarily in outpatient settings, a rapidly growing sector of the health care industry.

Job prospects. Job seekers who want to work as a medical assistant should find excellent job prospects. Medical assistants are projected to account for a very large number of new jobs, and many other opportunities will come from the need to replace workers leaving the occupation. Those with formal training or experience—particularly those with certification—should have the best job opportunities.

.

This all means that you will have a job in the future should you choose medical assisting as a profession. The medical field will always be around so there will be ample need for people to work with doctors in their clinics. Since the medical assisting field is expected to triple from 2006-2016, I highly recommend going to medical assistant school and getting certified.

As an oncology medical assistant you will most likely be doing the same thing as any other medical assistant. You will most likely be intrigued by the field though. You will encounter an array of amazing and interesting people as an oncology medical assistant.

Make sure that you can cope with death. As most of your patients will have cancer, some may eventually die. Since you will be building a relationship with these patients you need to know how to put up your medical wall once a patient has expired. You can be compassionate and have a feeling of grief, but you must also realize that death is a part of life and this is your job.

Let’s get thrown in to the world of neurosurgery! The neurosurgery field consists of everything in the neurosciences specifically brain, spine and nerves. Neurosurgeons perform surgeries on the brain, spine and carpal tunnel nerve or ulnar nerve. Although you may think that this is a limited field it really isn’t. The workload that you will receive as a medical assistant working with a neurosugeon will not be limited.

Some of the interesting duties will include:
removing staple or sutures from the head, neck, back, and hand

giving injections of pain medicine or antibiotics,

cleaning incisions,

packing wounds,

wrapping surgery sites,

and of course observing surgeries if you are allowed.

I really think one of the most rewarding experiences is when you see a patient for post-operative appointments and they are jumping for joy because they can walk again. There will be many patients who come in because of spinal cord injuries who are on the verge of paralysis. Sometimes surgery repairs this, if not most times. To see that the patient has a better quality of life compared to before surgery is a wonderful thing.

You’ll also bond with a lot of your patients. Since these patients will be coming back for regular treatment which may include physical therapy, imaging, epidural steroid injections (ESIs), etc they will grow accustomed to you. You will be the one who answers most of their questions and they’ll form a special relationship with you. This relationship is very rewarding and is one of the reasons to become a medical assistant.

Overall though, neurosurgery is a very interesting field in itself. With problems ranging from brain tumors or Chiari malformations to severe low back pain and carpal tunnel, this is a field that will keep you intrigued for many years. Seeing all of the advancements as well as successes will lead you to want to stay in this field as a neurosurgery medical assistant forever.

Oprah is known for giving out great advice. She has a ton of followers and many so-called experts on her show, writing articles for her site and magazine and giving you advice. But what do some of these people really know about the daily tasks that happen in a medical clinic or about what doctors recommend for prescription medications. In a recent article titled “Your Rx: What Your Doctor Won’t Tell You” by Dorothea Hunter they detail how exactly to understand what the instructions on your medicine means.

Working in a busy neurosurgery clinic I can tell you that the doctors have enough time to tell the patient what they are giving them before they are leaving the room. There really aren’t a lot of doctor’s who actually take the time to go through the medication they are prescribing to their patients. This means that the job falls on the medical assistant to explain what the medicine does and how a patient should take it once they are at home, especially if you call in prescriptions. Now there are many doctors who do go through the prescription instructions but not many.

One great thing about the article is that it does give a breakdown on what certain instructions means. So by retaining this information from the article and adding it to what you already know you’ll be able to answer the questions that your patient has.

To Read “Your Rx: What Your Doctor Won’t Tell You” by Dorothea Hunter Click Here!

Excerpt:

At Mealtimes
Pills meant to be taken with food should be swallowed at the table after a balanced meal. Steer clear of grapefruit and its juice while on medication: Substances in the fruit can drastically increase how much of a medication your body absorbs, and the effect may occur with more than 20 different types of drugs. Caffeine can interfere with theophylline, a drug used to treat wheezing and shortness of breath from asthma, bronchitis, and other lung conditions. And generally, alcohol is a no-no. “Alcohol can alter the rate at which the stomach empties itself, affecting the absorption of certain drugs,” says B. Joseph Guglielmo, PharmD, chair of clinical pharmacy for the University of California, San Francisco, School of Pharmacy. “It can also cause the liver to metabolize some medications more rapidly. Plus, it can increase the sedative effect of medications such as antihistamines and antidepressants.” If your prescription is for only a couple of weeks, you may want to avoid alcohol for the duration. If you’re treating a chronic problem, discuss the best approach with your doctor.

Medical Assistant Job Description
By Michelle Louis

The US Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics puts out every year very detailed information on jobs in the United States. In their 2008-09 Handbook, the job of medical assistant was included as one of the fastest growing industries in the country.

There are many administrative and clinical tasks that need to be done in order to keep health professionals offices running efficiently. Medical assistants are the ones who perform these tasks. In contrast, Physician assistants examine, diagnose, and actually treat patients.

Several factors may affect the specific duties of a medical assistant. These factors include the practitioner’s medicine specialty as well as the location and size of the practice. In a small office a medical assistant would have a bigger variety of tasks while medical assistants working in a large practice may have more specialized job assignments. This is no different than any other administrative position.

Medical assistant duties can be divided into two main categories, administrative and clinical. Administrative duties include updating and filing medical records, insurance forms, and logistical arrangements for hospital admission and lab work. They also perform tasks less specific to medical settings, such as answering telephones, greeting patients, handling correspondence, scheduling appointments, and handling billing and bookkeeping.

Clinical duties depend on what is allowed by State Law. Clinical medical assistants may be required to take a patient’s medical history and record certain vital signs, explain treatments to patients, prepare a patient for a medical exam, and assist the physician during an exam. Additionally, it is possible that a medical assistant would collect lab specimens, be responsible for proper disposal of contaminated supplies, and sterilize medical equipment used in the office. They might also instruct patients about medications and special diets, prepare and administer medications as directed by a physician, authorize drug refills as directed, telephone prescriptions to a pharmacy, draw blood, prepare patients for x-rays, take electrocardiograms, remove sutures, and change dressings.
