Oncology is medical specialty focusing on the treatment of cancer. A physician who practices oncology is an oncologist. Often, oncologists also practice hematology, which is the treatment of cancers (malignancies) and abnormalities in the blood. Oncologists diagnose and prescribe a variety of treatments for cancer including medication, radiation, chemotherapy, surgery, or palliative care.
As an oncology medical assistant you will most likely be doing the same thing as any other medical assistant. You will most likely be intrigued by the field though. You will encounter an array of amazing and interesting people as an oncology medical assistant.
Make sure that you can cope with death. As most of your patients will have cancer, some may eventually die. Since you will be building a relationship with these patients you need to know how to put up your medical wall once a patient has expired. You can be compassionate and have a feeling of grief, but you must also realize that death is a part of life and this is your job.
