“Orthopedic surgery or orthopedics (also spelled orthopaedics) is the branch of surgery concerned with conditions involving the musculoskeletal system. Orthopedic surgeons use both surgical and non-surgical means to treat musculoskeletal trauma, sports injuries, degenerative diseases, infections, tumors, and congenital conditions.”

As an orthopedic medical assistant you will work with orthepedic surgeons that provide services for most musculoskeletal problems. You will most likely assist in outpatient or in-office procedures including arthoscopes, splinting and casting. This is a very interesting career to have if you like bones.

Othopedics perform many different procedures some include:
Hand surgery
Shoulder and elbow surgery
Total joint reconstruction (arthroplasty)
Pediatric orthopedics
Foot and ankle surgery
Spine surgery
Musculoskeletal oncology
Surgical sports medicine
Orthopedic trauma .

Oncology is medical specialty focusing on the treatment of cancer. A physician who practices oncology is an oncologist. Often, oncologists also practice hematology, which is the treatment of cancers (malignancies) and abnormalities in the blood. Let’s get thrown in to the world of neurosurgery! The neurosurgery field consists of everything in the neurosciences specifically brain, spine and nerves. Neurosurgeons perform surgeries on the brain, spine and carpal tunnel nerve or ulnar nerve. Although you may think that this is a limited field it really isn’t. As a medical assistant you want a job that challenges you and remains interesting. Most people who are interested in a medical assistant job will go for the most common doctor which is internal medicine (general medicine, primary care). Although this is rewarding there are several other fields that offer rewarding aspects as well. Some in particular are neurosurgery, orthopedic, cardiology, physiatry, and oncology. Hopefully you will find one of these fields interesting for a medical assistant job and find a new passion! As with everything you should research medical assistant jobs and this will help with your research.
